The Refugee Committee

"Lord, when was it that we saw you hungry or thirsty of a stranger or naked or sick or in prison, and did not take care of you?"     Matthew 25:44

Who is a refugee? All kinds of people, but no one is a refugee by choice. Refugees are forced to flee out of fear for their lives and freedom. The United Nations High Commission for Refugees estimates there are 9 - 10 million refugees worldwide and an additional 25 million "internally displaced persons."

According to the 1951 Convention relating to the Status of Refugees, a refugee is a person who "owing to a well-founded fear of being persecuted for reasons of race, religion, nationality, membership of a particular social group, or political opinion, is outside the country of his nationality, and is unable to or, owing to such fear, is unwilling to avail himself of the protection of that country... "    These people are forced to flee their homes and are in need of a solution. Sometimes a third country resettlement becomes the only solution.

That's where we come in.  The diocese of Huron is proud to currently be giving aid to 14 families.

Please contact Ruth Kivinen for more information, or if you would like to assist in this important outreach ministry.
