A note about receiving Communion at St. Mary's

It is our custom in the Anglican Church to invite all people who have been baptized with water in the name of the Father, Son and Holy Spirit, regardless of their denomination, to receive the sacrament of Holy Communion.

Individuals, who are able, come forward to the communion rail and either kneel or stand and raise their hands to receive the bread. The Priest says  "The Body of Christ."

While still kneeling or standing they drink wine from the cup and the Lay Administrant say "The Blood of Christ."

Individuals who choose to receive in one kind only (the bread) cross their arms over their chest as a signal to the Lay Administrant that they do not wish to drink from the cup.

Everyone who comes for communion is asked to refrain from the practice of Intinction (dipping the bread in the wine.)

After receiving the bread and the wine (or bread only if that is preferred) individuals remain at the rail until the person to their left has finished receiving both bread and wine.  The practice of waiting for the person beside you to finish receiving prevents possible spills of wine and is considered good table manners.
